7 January 2022 – After spending a couple of days anchored in the rolly Bahia Colonet we decided to sail on down to Bahia San Quintin, sheltered behind Cabo San Quintin. It was quite foggy when we woke up in Bahia Colonet on the 7th, the cliffs were obscured. Eventually the fog pushed offshore but we could see the bank out there all day.

We decided to wait until just before sunset to make the run down to Cabo San Quintin so as to arrive in daylight and to pass some dangerous rocks south of Isla San Martin in the light. We needn’t have. Though the passage was only 43 NM, the wind never did get up and we made very little speed. We did however sail almost immediately into a very dense fog bank where we stayed until early morning, checking the radar religiously on the hour for any non-AIS equipped vessels or obstructions. Finally, southeast of Isla San Martin and clear of the rocks, and past noon, we fired up the iron genny and drove around Cabo San Quintin into Bahia San Quintin and anchored in calmer conditions than in Colonet. Still a little rolly, but less so.

Bahia San Quintin is shallow and very scenic, with old cinder cones stacked to the north. Huge breaking waves curled in around the point and sounded scary but never quite reached us. They did get the Michin’s attention though, and some surfers came out one day to ride them. Several fishing boats also came into the bay and anchored for the weekend between us and the mainland, and another nut in a sailboat came in and anchored much farther northeast in the bay.

Once anchored in Bahia San Quintin we took advantage of the water heated by running the engine and took showers, finding once again the leak from the shower between the bulkhead and the cabin sole. After we showered I cleaned up the seam between the shower pan and the shower stall then ran a bead of bedding compound around it to seal the gap and stop the leak. With that completed, we all took a nap in the afternoon. After a clean nap we woke up, ate dinner and went back to sleep. We are living the Michin’s best life.
