John Dean Provincial park hike

20240923 – We had breakfast then I lay down for a bit, rising again around 0900 to research options for departing from Canoe Cove going to Friday Harbor on San Juan Island. We would of course be reentering the U.S. from outside the country, and Friday Harbor was the closest Port of Entry.

Around 1000 we drove up to the boatyard and left a message for Matt to call us (he was in a meeting) then we drove to John Dean Provincial Park, open now. We had some difficulty finding the entrance but finally got in and parked at the trailhead. We hiked just over a mile and three quarters in verdant old growth forest on Mount Newton. We stopped at the West Viewpoint overlooking the Saanich Inlet. Then we hiked back to the car via John Dean’s original cabin site.

I got a voicemail message from Matt saying they would splash us at noon tomorrow and we could plan to go to “C” dock with Mike aboard to check his work and do the final engine alignment.

We stopped into two groceries to provision for our return trip as well as some supper for tonight.

From there we drove back to the condo on Harbour Ave. where I had an email waiting that our raw water pump was in and could be picked up. Jimena and I hiked down to Gartside Marine, paid off the pump and brought it back to the condo about 1800. We walked around the

I thought Mike had grabbed the rebuild kit and was rebuilding the old pump, so I just figured the new one as a spare. But that was not to be the case. It turned out to be a very good thing I bought the new raw water pump.

We walked around the Resthaven Park and the small island that is also a bird sanctuary in Tsehum Harbour. We saw Canada geese and loons, appropriately enough, then we walked back to the condo where we ate some supper, watched some TV, then racked out around 2230.
