Cabo San Lucas
13 February 2022 – After sailing a long leg down the coast, rounding the Cape in some wind and scattered precipitation, and braving the exodus of ants from the harbor mouth just before sunrise, we spent a fairly busy, but also a restful and restorative week and a half in the IGY marina. By the time we arrived it was a near necessity to be connected to shore power as our house battery bank was dying. I could charge the bank to 100% and within 20 minutes or so the voltage on the house bank would drop from 13 and change to less than 11 volts. This began to affect our instruments, particularly our AIS. Unhappily, it was not the cause of the LED Tri-color light interference with our VHF radio.
While in Cabo San Lucas we took care of many chores, ordered new batteries, bought some things for the boat, cleaned the boat, bought passes to the Mexican National Park system, bought fishing licenses, mixed in some dining out and fended off the veritable hordes of touts who scour the veritable hordes of gringo tourists who arrive daily by airplane and cruise ship. We walked around the harbor for exercise and out of curiosity, and we walked around the town out of necessity, to buy provisions and to get boat parts and equipment.
We worked out a plan to leave the boat for a few days while we went to San Diego to pick up parts and take a short break. Unfortunately, the only way to accomplish this was to have the boat hauled at Marine Group Boat Works. However, this also provided us a convenient address in San Diego to which we could ship parts.
Also about this time, we began talking with my parents about a window for a visit on the Cape. The weather in the States continued wintery so a short escape to sunny, warmer Baja appealed.
After our sojourn in Cabo San Lucas we sailed the short trip up to San Jose del Cabo, nominally 16 NM away. While Cabo San Lucas was a welcome respite and the IGY Marina was well-run and the people friendly, it was busy, loud and busy so we were happy to get out of there and up to Puerto de los Cabos.
